Bollywood film on India historic 1983 cricket World Cup win is Coming soon

The success of films such as Chak De! India (2007) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) has opened the gates for more sports films in the Hindi film industry — with Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom biopic and Shoojit Sircar’s film on football club Mohun Bagan coming up. And now, director Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, who last made Lahore (2010), will be making a film on India’s historic win at the Cricket World Cup in 1983.

Sources from the industry inform us that all the 14 players who were part of the winning team will come on board as consultants for the project. Cricketing legends such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Mohinder Amarnath, among others, will provide inputs to the film’s team to lend authenticity to the film.

When contacted, Sanjay confirms the news, saying, “Yes, my producer Vishnu Induri who is also the brain behind a celebrity cricket league, is currently in talks with all the players. They will start the required paperwork soon. I’m getting into the pre-production of the film right now, so I won’t be able to reveal more details.”

Sources close to the director tell us that he has already met Kapil to get feedback. “I met Kapil paaji with regards to the script. I have also met reporters and commentators to get accurate information and the feel about that era since  cricket has changed so much in the last 31 years,” he says. When contacted, Kapil Dev says, “I am aware that talks are on with us (the team), but we haven’t signed anything as yet.”
