Residents in a US Town have Gold Pouring from their Taps

Residents in a US town have gold on tap, literally.

Gold in drinking water

The local community of Whitehall, in the US state of Montana, have discovered gold flakes pouring out of their household water taps.

Mark Brown said his wife Sharon found specks of gold flakes in the soap suds as she was washing up.

"She pulled the plug to let the water out and it was glistening, gleaming little flecks. I can't explain it... It's bizarre," he told NBC.

The Browns' neighbour Paul Harper revealed he has also found gold in his drinking water.

While the residents initially had their doubts as to what the flecks were, chemical tests have proved that it is pure gold.

Montana does have a gold mine located five miles northeast of Whitehall, however an official with the State Department of Environmental Quality said there's no reason to suspect the gold came from the mine.

It is thought that the flakes could have come from pipes or pumps connected to the water supply.

Whitehall receives its drinking water from two wells in the middle of the town.

While you'd think the discovery of gold in the water might have prompted a gold rush, in fact the residents are more concerned about what else might be in their drinking water.

"If we're getting heavy metals that you can see with the naked eye, what else might be in there?" said Brown.

A sample of the gold drinking water has been sent to a lab for testing.

Apple Echoes Dropbox WhatsApp and With New Software Features

“Picasso had a saying — ‘good artists copy; great artists steal’ — and we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.” ~ Steve Jobs

Apple announced a flood of new features for its software platforms for Macs and iPhones, many of which might feel familiar to users of apps like Dropbox, Voxer and WhatsApp as Apple moves to keep up with developments in cloud and mobile communications technology.

1) Tying Apple devices together with features like calling and emails that can work simultaneously across iPhones and Macs.

2) Bringing other apps services directly into Apple’s native apps, allowing a user to for instance use a photo editing app within the company’s native photo service or add their data to Apple’s notifications stream.

At an unusually lighthearted keynote, Chief Executive Tim Cook said that the updated iPhone platform iOS 8 was “a giant release” for both consumers and developers.

The reveals included some neat developer features that make programing an app for Apple’s devices a lot easier with features like Swift — but also put mature services like DropBox and Skype under pressure by essentially aping them as native Apple features. Jan Koum, the founder of Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger tweeted his own veiled criticism at the event which seemed heavy on familiar features.

But some developers felt that Apple was still leaving a level playing field for other developers to compete with its own apps. “Everyone’s iterating and moving forward,” said Nick D’Aloisio, who just won an Apple design award for his Yahoos News Digest app. “It’s part of the industry. Now whoever has the best product wins.”

Among the big reveals:

- iCloud Drive seeks to redeem Apple’s struggles with cloud sharing with a service eerily similar to Dropbox. It stores documents and data from apps in the Mac’s Finder window, syncing the data across devices and even across Microsoft Windows.  (Ironically, Steve Jobs tried to buy Dropbox back in 2009, and then when he was rebuffed vowed to destroy the company with iCloud.)

- A featured on the theme of bringing devices together, called Handoff, lets users swipe an email from their iPhone to their Mac (if they’re close enough) to continue writing the email on that device, or pick up where they were browsing on Safari on a separate device.

- A calling feature very similar to Skype and Viber allows users to take phone calls on their Macs and not just their phones

- Mark-Up, an extension to Mail and Safari that lets users edit attachments by drawing on them.

- Mail Drive allows Mac users to send attachments up to 5 GB in size.

There were also a raft of features specifically for iOS 8 and messaging that appeared to draw on the popularity of third-party apps:

- A new native feature on the iOS keyboard called QuickType uses “language models” to predict words before they are typed, with an interface very similar to that of SwiftKey, a predictive keyboard app that has not been able to sell on Apple’s App Store because of the closed ecosystem for iOS. Ironically enough, now that Apple has the QuickType feature, it would allow iOS users to buy and install third-party keyboard apps.

- Within iMessage Apple revealed a push-to-talk, and push-to-video feature very similar to push-to-talk features announced by messaging service WhatsApp several months ago, and popularized by the messaging app Voxer.

The founders of keyboard app maker SwiftKey said they were “delighted Apple has decided to embrace the importance of opening its platform to third party keyboards.” Without mentioning Apple’s QuickType feature, Jon Reynolds and Ben Medlock added: “Are we going to build SwiftKey Keyboard for iOS 8? Of course we are. We’ve already started.”

Apple unveils OS X Yosemite new OS for MacBooks and iMac

Apple's Mac OS is getting a new design & better ways to exchange files, while new features for iPhones, iPads include one for keeping tabs on your health.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple's Mac operating system will have easier ways to share and search, while the iOS software for iPhones and iPads is getting new features for keeping tabs on your health and controlling home devices.

Apple executive Craig Federighi said data from various fitness-related devices now live in silos, so you can't get a comprehensive picture of your health. He said that will change with HealthKit in iOS 8. Apple is also working with the Mayo Clinic to make sure your weight, calorie intake and other health metrics are within healthy ranges.

Apple is also making it easier for various devices to work together, even though the Mac and mobile systems are separate. You can share songs, movies and books you purchase with your entire family, and you can sync photos more easily across several devices. Macs and mobile gadgets will share more features, and you can exchange files between the two more easily and even make phone calls from your Mac.

The free updates will come this fall, though app developers get a test version Monday as the company opened its 25th annual developers conference in San Francisco.

Here are the highlights:

CHANGES TO MAC COMPUTERS:

The next Mac system will be called Yosemite, after the national park, now that Apple is naming it after California locales rather than cats.

You'll be able to search for content on the computer and on the Internet at once, similar to a feature available with Microsoft's Windows 8.

Apple is expanding its iCloud storage service so that you can store and sync files of any type,  not just the ones designed specifically for iCloud. It's similar to how other services such as Dropbox let you work with the same files on multiple devices more easily.

A Mail Drop feature will make it easier to send large files. Instead of pushing the entire file by email and overloading mail servers, the Mac will create a link that the recipient can click for the full file.

The Mac's Safari Web browser will have more privacy controls and ways to share links more easily.

CHANGES TO IPHONES AND IPADS:

Like the new Mac OS, the iOS 8 system will have a universal search tool to cover both your device and the Internet. It will also get the iCloud Drive service.

The new software will sport interactive notifications, so you can respond to a message without having to leave another app. It will have new gestures, such as double tapping to see a list of frequent contacts.

A QuickType keyboard promises predictive typing suggestions. For example, if you start typing, 'Do you want to go to,' the phone will suggest 'dinner' or 'movie' as the next word. Currently, the suggestions are limited to spelling corrections.

IOS 8 will have a built-in health-management tool to help people track their vital signs, diet and sleeping habits. Apple's chief rival, Samsung Electronics Co., incorporated fitness-related features in its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, and announced plans last week for similar management tools.

Apple announces iOS 8

Following the momentous visual overhaul of last year's iOS 7, Apple's next iteration of its mobile operating system tweaks and refines.

Apple unveiled the next iteration of its mobile operating system, iOS 8, at its annual World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Last year's bold mobile overhaul with iOS 7 was a stark departure for the iPhone maker's core philosophy of tweak and refine, but with iOS 8 Apple has returned to its tried-and-true approach of incremental but important enhancements. Some of the biggest changes for the software are interactive notifications and more fluid tie-ins with Apple's desktop OS X software.
For instance, users listening to music can now swipe down on a text message that pops up as drop-down notification and access the keyboard, replying directly from within iOS's Notification Center without having to leave the app you're currently in. Other, smaller changes include a better tab view for managing Internet browsing on iPad,

The biggest addition, however, is QuickType, which punctuates a greater SMS overhaul with iOS 8 -- Apple software head Craig Federighi said onstage that Messages is the most used app on iOS. QuickType gives users a predictive keyboard, meaning it will learn how you talk with different people to allow for quicker auto-correct and fill-out suggestions.

Beyond QuickType, the SMS tweaks include the capability to leave or mute specific message threads like group messages with a single button, as well as share location to users within the thread, as well as audio and video within the thread using a single swipe. Additionally, all media shared in a text thread is now grouped together in a single thread accessible by clicking any one of the audio, video, or photo messages.
iOS 8 marks the second major release of Apple's mobile operating system under the guidance of head designer Jony Ive and Federighi. Apple CEO Tim Cook fired the prior iOS chief, Scott Forstall, in October 2012 in part for refusing to take responsibility for Apple's Maps fiasco. Ive spearheaded the complete redesign of iOS 7, the first major overhaul since Apple introduced the software with the first iPhone in 2007.
iOS 7 featured different typography and color schemes from previous versions of the operating system, as well as a flatter design concept. iOS 7 also added useful features like automatic updates to make everyday use easier, AirDrop, and iTunes Radio, as well as a new control center that gives quick access to most-used features. The iOS 7.1 update in March incorporated CarPlay -- a way for the iPhone (5 and newer) to power a touch screen on a new car's dashboard -- and other bug fixes and tweaks.

Sun belches out radiation plume SEVEN times the size of Earth

By Ellie Zolfagharifard

Iris must commit to pointing at certain areas of the sun at least a day in advance, so catching a CME in the act involves some educated guesses and a little bit of luck. Pictured is the solar flare captured by Iris (right) and the same flare later seen by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (left)

  • The huge curtain of solar radiation erupted on May 9 but didn't affect Earth
  • It was the first ever coronal mass ejection (CME) observed by the Iris probe
  • During a CME, changes in sun’s magnetic fields can cause a section of the solar surface to expand, ejecting billions of tonnes of particles into space
  • CMEs can disrupt communication signals and cause surges in power grids
Nasa’s latest solar observatory has captured footage of the sun belching out a stream of charged particles at 1.5 million miles per hour.
The curtain of radiation, which erupted on May 9, was the first coronal mass ejection (CME) observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or Iris.

The footage reveals the CME in ‘extraordinary detail’ showing a field of view about five Earths wide and seven-and-a-half Earths tall.

HOW DO CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS IMPACT EARTH?

CMEs are a mass of charged particles and magnetic field energy that bursts from the sun like a volcanic eruption.
Material from a coronal mass ejection takes two to three days to reach Earth, but in this case, the coronal mass ejection didn't affect our planet.
Coronal mass ejections interact with Earth’s magnetic field to generate auroras and magnetic storms.
The CME's magnetic fields peel back the outermost layers of Earth's fields changing their very shape, distortions which can can degrade communication signals and cause unexpected surges in power grids.
They also can cause aurora. Storms are rare during solar minimum, but as the sun nears solar maximum, large storms occur several times per year.
Because the observatory has to position itself a day in advance, it was a stroke of luck that the eruption happened just as the probe was pointing the right way.
‘We focus in on active regions to try to see a flare or a CME,’ said Bart De Pontieu, the Iris science lead at Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in California.

And then we wait and hope that we'll catch something. This is the first clear CME for Iris so the team is very excited.’
During a CME, changes in the sun’s magnetic fields cause a large section of the surface of the sun to expand rapidly, ejecting billions of tonnes of particles out into space.

Material from a coronal mass ejection takes two to three days to reach Earth, peeling back the outermost layers of the planet’s magnetic field.

CME’s can degrade communication signals and cause unexpected surges in power grids. However, this CME is not thought to have made a significant impact on Earth.
CME’s often accompany a solar flare – a solar eruption that pushes out waves of light all across the spectrum.

Iris can observe both types of eruption. It was launched in June 2013 to study what's known as the interface region, which is a layer between the sun's surface the corona that has long baffled scientists.

This close-up of the sunspot underneath the March 29, 2014, flare shows incredible detail. The image was captured by the G-band camera at Sacramento Peak in New Mexico. This instrument can focus on only a small area at once, but provide very high resolution

HOW DO FLARES AFFECT US?

Solar flares can damage satellites and have an enormous financial cost.
Astronauts are not in immediate danger because of the relatively low orbit of this manned mission. They do have to be concerned about cumulative exposure during space walks.
The charged particles can also threaten airlines by disturbing the Earth’s magnetic field.
Very large flares can even create currents within electricity grids and knock out energy supplies.
A positive aspect, from an aesthetic point of view, is that the auroras are enhanced.
Geomagnetic storms are more disruptive now than in the past because of our greater dependence on technical systems that can be affected by electric currents.
By capturing light emitted by atoms of different temperatures, Iris can looks at different heights above the sun's surface to analyse this obscure layer.
The line moving across the middle of the movie is the entrance slit for Iris’ spectrograph, an instrument that can split light into its many wavelengths – a technique that ultimately allows scientists to measure temperature, velocity and density of the solar material behind the slit.
While the strength of this CME is yet to be revealed, it follows on the heels of the most powerful type of solar flare that’s ever been recorded by the space agency.
The huge event on the sun occurred on 29 March 2014, but Nasa has only now analysed the data from their fleet of observatories.
This fleet consisted of four telescopes in space and one observatory on Earth.
The flare observed was an X-class flare, the biggest and highest-energy solar flares that have ever been observed.

Amitabh Bachchan is upset with someone fashionably late

The crew of one of Amitabh Bachchan’s upcoming project hit a wrong chord with the actor, when Big B arrived on the sets of the project, complete with routine make-up at 4 am, only to meet an unprepared crew.

Amitabh Bachchan is upset with someone ‘fashionably late’.The actor, who is known for his professionalism and punctuality, expressed his annoyance on his blog.

“There is a sadistic pleasure in getting up for work at 4 am and reporting on location with heavy make up routine, on time .. to find … well .. better unsaid than said .. It lends itself to a sense of labor and work ethic that is so essential in any profession .. ours more importantly, where it is a considered given, perhaps even if the phraseology often used calls it ‘fashionably late’ .. Why would it be ‘fashionable’ to be late ? I guess for a celebrity it would be a considered routine – build anxiety, expectation and notice, for when you do arrive at an un appointed hour, all gaze and attention would be drawn towards you .. which I would imagine is what celebrities crave for in any case ..”

The 72-year-old actor is simultaneously shooting for Anurag Kshyap’s TV series Yudh, whose first look was launched during the IPL 7 finale on June 1 and R Balki’s film ‘Shamitabh’.
‘Shamitabh’ also stars national award winning actor Dhanush and Kamaal Haasan’s daughter Akshara.

Amitabh Bachchan, who is hardly never not on time also said that celebrities should not take their fame, success and stardom for granted.
“What most forget or perhaps have never allowed for introspection, is the fact that attention has limited ‘lasts’, particularly so for those in the professions of film and sports .. up there one day and forgotten the next .. so what happens to the desire for committed attention, so arduously worked on during days of celebrity and value!”
He also posted, “All attention no matter how vast and intense, shall have limitations. It is wise and prudent at times to consider this during the times of time. The greatest attention seekers in the universe have faced reversals. Not all though have had the courage to accept it .. it is imperative that you do. Or at least have the strength to do so. Do not gloat in the presence of success and achievement. They are temporary and limited. One wishes that they survive to endless limits, but one also wishes that they be considered wishes .. I try to ..”
